Hugh Oldham, a local boy who went on to become Bishop of Exeter, founded The Manchester Grammar School in 1515. He had the highest aspirations for MGS, and each year we fulfill his vision of being an academic school for boys of all backgrounds.
During the last 500 years, the School has evolved, and it has been the ability of the School to adapt and develop which has helped us to remain one of the country's outstanding academic schools.

The future development of the School is subject to a Development Plan, which encompasses the best ideas of the Governors, the High Master, staff and pupils of MGS. The Plan, which will lead us to our 500th anniversary in 2015 and beyond, defines both the improvement of facilities and procedures affecting all our pupils.
As we approach this momentous anniversary, we will continue to develop, stimulating the already exciting environment that is MGS. Rodger Alderson will lead the wider MGS community in his role as Anniversary Co-ordinator as we look to mark and celebrate our 500 year history in 2015.
The ongoing success of the Foundation Bursary Fund in supporting more than 240 pupils in perpetuity has enabled the School to remain true to its ethos of being a school open to all who will benefit from an MGS education, regardless of financial background. It is a sad fact that each year we have to disappoint deserving boys who have displayed through our entry procedures that they would benefit from an MGS education, but for whom we have insufficient funds. For this reason, the School is now committed to raising more funds to support means-tested bursaries.
Our Development Office manages all aspects of fundraising for the School, keeps in touch with our alumni – known as Old Mancunians – and is responsible for the management of our Archive Library. Director of Development Simon Jones and members of his team are always happy to answer questions and supply further information.
