Community-minded pupils from MGS have set up an initiative to help homeless people within the Greater Manchester community.

Year 12 pupils Babrus Qadir, Umar Din, Wajahat Khan and Ahmed Hayat have set up the ILM Group, which is subsection of MGS ISOC, and which meets weekly to discuss matters related to Islamic faith.

In Arabic, ILM translates as ‘knowledge’, and, as homeless people in Greater Manchester currently depend on donations more than ever before due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the boys have set up an initiative to collect food for six local food banks – Tree of Life, Chelwood Foodbank, Wellspring, Copperdale, Unity Community and the Myriad Foundation.

The food donated will help support and care for over 150 families and couples in desperate need in the Greater Manchester area.

The boys said: “Supporting vulnerable families in our community during these unprecedented times due to the Covid-19 pandemic is very important. We want to get involved to do our bit to help those in need.”

All donations will be gratefully received, especially tinned foods, cereal, tea and coffee, pasta, rice, sugar and toiletries. These can be placed in the collection box in MGS’s main Reception.
