Congratulations to MGS runner Esam Aftab, in Year 12, who has enjoyed a record-breaking season on the athletics track. In 2021 alone, he has achieved new personal bests in the 100m (11.55), 200m (22.7) and the 400m (50.29).

To put those fantastic achievements into perspective, at just 17, Esam is becoming one to watch on the national athletics circuits.

Esam, a member of Trafford Athletics Club, has put in the hours training hard on the track despite the challenges of the past year with on/off lockdowns and in between his school studies.

He is now in good company in the history books at MGS. One of our most famous alumnus, Alan Garner (MGS 46-53) – after whom one of our libraries is named – was rated “the fastest schoolboy sprinter in Great Britain” in 1952, while he was a pupil at MGS. Alan’s records include running the 100 yards in 10.2 seconds, the 220 yards in 22.8 seconds and 440 yards in 52.4 seconds.

Despite the difference in imperial measurements, Alan and Esam’s times are very similar – although Esam might slightly edge it on the 200 and 400m runs!
