Ahead of the performances, MGS pupils have been speaking about their involvement in the play Daisy Pulls It Off. Daisy Pulls It Off is the heart-warming story of a young, honest girl with plenty of pluck, from humble beginnings. Off she goes on a scholarship to the prestigious Grangewood School for Girls, with all its jolly hockey sticks, midnight feasts and splendid scrapes. But will the other girls (and teachers) be as welcoming as Daisy hopes?

Isaac and Joseph are the only pupils selected from year 7, an impressive recognition of their hard work and dedication to the play. Isaac plays the character of Winnie Irving. He commented on his connection to the role: “I love my character; she is a sassy, outspoken student who is actually the youngest character in the play as she is in the 2nd form. I like her name and I think she is an overall interesting character. There are a lot of important morals, that you should always be kind and treat others how you want to be treated”.

Isaac described the moment when he discovered his audition success: “When I found out I had the role I was in Music and I opened up my surface as Ms Appleton had just told me that there was a surprise on an e-mail. I read the e-mail and I did a silent celebration as I had worked hard for the audition. I enjoy acting because I like playing somebody else and I love putting on an act and enjoying myself. I really like the costumes as I think they tie the whole play together”.

Isaac also spoke about his plans for the future: “In an ideal world I would love to be an actor as I reckon it would be so much fun meeting all these new people. This has been my greatest achievement so far and I’m really happy I have been given this opportunity as I have not done much acting before”.

Joseph plays the character of Miss Granville who is the Mistress of the Upper Fourth and an English teacher. He commented: “I absolutely love Daisy pulls it off as it is just such a great play that I can’t wait to perform. Her personality is quite unstable as one moment she can be extremely happy and the next she could be furious; she also seems to have serious droughts in elementary school pupils like Daisy. The most important parts in the play to me is to always maintain very high energy and when you are on the stage make the most of it as you want to be remembered by the audience . Also, this is a comedy so you must keep the crowd laughing and entertained at all times so there is no room for slacking”.

Joseph added: “When I heard I received a role in the play I was so happy I felt like I was going to burst. I am glad I got the role of Miss Granville and I intend not to disappoint . I enjoy acting as it just allows be to disconnect from the real world and be in this new world where there are adventures and interesting stories yet you know that is all also just a show. Overall, I think that this experience will be unforgettable and magical”.

Kingsley is a year 9 student who is playing the character of Miss Gibson, the Headmistress of Grangewood School for Girls, the fictitious school in which the play is set. He commented: “I enjoy playing Miss Gibson as her character allowed me to have a bit of free reign with my portrayal of her. She is characterised by the classic ‘firm but fair’ adage however the lines allowed me to emphasise either of these in excess in order to build the character to my own liking. When I first got the email about getting the part, I was in a history and I couldn’t restrain my beaming to the point at which some of my classmates found my perpetual smiling rather creepy! I enjoy acting because it gives me a release, of sorts, from my own life of deadlines, tests and sports and allows me to be someone else and to search within myself to build a character. I have greatly enjoyed the process of being in this brilliant play and the numerous hard hours it entailed which has all proved to be worth its weight in gold”.

Best of luck to all the boys ahead of their performances!
