The British Mathematical Olympiad 2023-24

Well done to all of the pupils who sat The British Mathematical Olympiad and received awards. Qualification for this competition involved achieving in the top 1000 out of 100,000+ entries nationally, so this is an impressive achievement for these pupils.
Pupils first sat the Senior Mathematical Challenge paper to gain qualification for the first round of The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO1). The BMO1 paper lasted 3.5 hours and generally consists of six questions, each worth 10 marks.
A special mention should go to year 12 pupil Hercules who was awarded Distinction, Bronze Medal and has been invited to the second round of The British Mathematical Olympiad (BMO2). Hercules spoke about his experiences: “I achieved 48/60 in the British Maths Olympiad Round 1 (BMO1) this year, which is a significant improvement over my performance last year, placing me in the top 100 in the country and qualifying me to Round 2. Despite having done very little formal training in Mathematical Olympiads in the past, I was pleased with my performance since I spent a considerable amount of time self-studying common Olympiad techniques and doing past paper questions. I am also very grateful for the support of the Maths department, especially from Dr Graham, Mr McMillan and Mrs Allinson. Hopefully, I can similarly improve on my BMO round 2 performance last year, and I hope to fully solve at least 1 question (due to the high difficulty and niche nature of the questions).”
Year 13 pupils Henry and Nathaniel were also awarded Distinction. Only the top 26% get awarded a Distinction, so this puts Hercules, Henry and Nathaniel in the top 250 pupils nationally.
The following pupils were awarded Merit: Enoch in year 11; Tej in year 12, Yoonjae and Vibhav in year 13. Sri in year 11, Ashmit in year 12 and Ed in year 13 all were awarded Qualification.
