African and Caribbean Society Dinner 2024

On Friday 9th February, The Manchester Grammar School hosted its first ever African and Caribbean Society Dinner. This historic event brought together students, parents, alumni, and staff to celebrate the vibrant cultures and backgrounds that enrich our school community.
As guests arrived, they were greeted by the soft melodies of year 13 pupil Yoonjae on the piano, setting the tone for an evening of warmth and camaraderie. The ACS committee members, Mosope and Donté, extended a heartfelt welcome, ensuring that everyone felt included from the moment they stepped through the door.
The night commenced with an impactful speech from ACS Co-Founder and current year 13 pupil Tosin, capturing the essence of the event. "Tonight is about more than just a meal; it’s about community. It's about celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures and traditions within the African and Caribbean society here at MGS. It's creating a space to share our stories, experiences, and dreams for the future."
Amidst laughter and conversation, guests relished a delicious meal showcasing the flavours of Africa and the Caribbean. This culinary journey was followed by an inspiring speech from guest speaker Professor Jonathan Wilson, a distinguished MGS alumnus with an illustrious career spanning advertisement, marketing consultancy, and academia.
Professor Wilson shared his personal journey, navigating identity and resilience in the face of challenges. Reflecting on his time at MGS, he recounted the obstacles of being one of the few Black students in the school. "Things are changing in ways I hadn't imagined," he remarked, expressing gratitude for the celebration of Black excellence in such a natural and inclusive setting.
As the evening concluded, Deputy Head (Pastoral) Dr. Crawshaw expressed gratitude to the ACS Committee for their dedication and vision. He envisioned the African and Caribbean Society Dinner flourishing in the years to come, serving as a beacon of unity for the MGS community.
In a world marked by division, events like these remind us of the power of solidarity and inclusivity. Our sincere thanks to all who contributed to making this evening a resounding success. Together, we celebrate diversity, honor our heritage, and look toward a future filled with promise and possibility.
