Relaxing in the Sixth Form Common Room
Sixth Form at MGS is an exciting period of our pupils' lives and it is a privilege and a pleasure to share this time with so many talented and personable young men. Students entering the Sixth Form either follow an A-level programme or study for the International Baccalaureate Diploma. In addition, all sixth formers join our enrichment programme where they have the opportunity to participate in games and community service and do an extended piece of research.

IB student, Hayden Cooke, achieved maximum points in his IB examinations this year and is one of fewer than a 100 students worldwide from over 30,000 IB students who achieved this. Read the full story here
There is an opportunity to study a wide range of courses, but we do not offer A-level or IB courses in Law, Business Studies or Computer Studies. However, we do offer non-examined 'taster' courses in these subjects in the enrichment programme and every year we have many students who go on to study these subjects at the best universities.

Around 400 students are divided into two year groups, Lower Sixth and Upper Sixth which are separated into forms and teaching groups of about 13 sixth formers. Most places in the Sixth Form are taken up by MGS students moving up from Year 11. However, we have a growing number of students joining us from other schools for their Sixth Form careers, and we are delighted to welcome them to MGS.

As Head of Sixth Form, my team and I - along with Form Tutors and an active Careers Department - provide advice and guidance to all of our Sixth Form students. At this stage of their school career, MGS boys are treated as adults with considerable potential for developing responsibility, teamwork and leadership skills through the prefect system, sports and societies, camps and treks and generally around the School. Some Sixth Form societies are run jointly with local girls' schools and students are encouraged to play a full part in their local community.
Our Results
Our students' results are amongst the very best in the country, and we have an international reputation for academic excellence; over the last five years an average of 36 of our students have gone on to study at Oxford and Cambridge.
However, we are proud that the majority of our students gain access to the most competitive courses of first choice, and at the top twenty universities in the World, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, LSE and London Imperial. To read more about our students' destinations, please view a copy of the latest Annual Report in our Publications Section.
In 2011, the Sutton Trust published their research examining the success of schools during the last three years in gaining places for their pupils in the leading 30 UK universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, LSE, Warwick, Durham, Birmingham, Manchester, Nottingham, York, and Edinburgh.
The Manchester Grammar School, with an 88.8% success rate over three years, is ranked seventh alongside Westminster (also 88.8%) and just ahead of St Paul’s School (88.7%) Just one boys’ school is ahead of MGS: Magdalen College School Oxford with 89.4%.
