Sixth Form Entry

Criteria and Assessment

butty_bar1

Pupils at other schools in Year 11 who expect to get excellent results at GCSE (the average of an A grade or more) are welcome to apply for entry to the MGS Sixth Form.  They should be aged between 15 years and nine months, and 17 years and three months on 1 September in the year of entry.

During their time in the Sixth Form they must live at home with parents or legal guardians unless the High Master gives exceptional permission for a student to live under the care of another relative or responsible adult.

The parents or legal guardians must agree to the financial arrangements for fees set by the Bursar.  It is possible that in certain cases of special need the MGS Foundation Bursary Appeal may be able to provide limited fee assistance for some new entrants to the MGS Sixth Form.  Details of fee arrangements are available from the Bursar’s office.  Please telephone Jeff Eyre on 0161 224 7201 Ext 214 for further information.

Applicants must have the support of their current Head Teacher and must consult him or her before applying. They should see our Sixth Form prospectus (viewable from the Publications Section of our website) and download an application form; alternatively, both of these may be requested as hard copies from our Admissions Office.

The completed form should be returned to Kath Heathcote, our Admissions Manager. Your completed application form should be sent, along with your cheque to cover the examination and assessment fee (details on the application form), to:

Applicants will be invited to visit MGS on a Saturday morning to take tests in some of the subjects they wish to study.  The tests will be based on the GCSE syllabuses and are designed to assess whether an applicant has the potential cope with the pace and style of teaching in the MGS Sixth Form; applicants who perform sufficiently well in these tests will be invited for an interview.

In all cases a reference will be requested from the Head Teacher at the applicant’s current school.  Successful applicants will then be made the offer of a place.  The standard offer is dependent upon achieving the average of an A grade or better at GCSE.

Applicants taking Dual Award Science may apply for courses in Chemistry, Physics or Biology if they are likely to get A*/A* at GCSE.  Those wishing to take courses in Politics or Classical Civilisation will be expected to get A or A* grades in similar subjects, eg, History.  Usually an A* is required in the subjects a student wishes to study at A-level in our Sixth Form (and in the Higher level subjects for IB).

Attending one of our Open Events is a great way to learn about Sixth Form life at MGS. We are always delighted to welcome any student considering entry to our Sixth Form at one of our Open Events or Sixth Form Admissions morning held in October each year.  If you are unable to attend any of our events, but would like to come and look around during term time, please contact our Admissions Manager, Kath Heathcote at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Our Head of Sixth Form, Patrick Thom, is always happy to answer any specific questions or give further advice on any matter relating to our Sixth Form. Please call one of the Sixth Form secretaries on 0161 224 7201 (Pauline Gilmore Ext 526 or Kat Duggan Ext 525) to arrange for a convenient time to talk to him.
