Director of Public Relations

Sally-Anne Rogers

Sally joined the School in 2002 having previously worked as Executive Assistant and Press Officer for the Greater Manchester Courts Service.  Here she was responsible for all aspects of internal communication training - from Director to administrative level - the management of the press (in and out of the courthouse), liaison with Greater Manchester Police, the Crown Prosecution Service, the Government and the public.

She originally trained and specialised in public relations and communication at Rolls-Royce Limited, and was a member of their Public Affairs team for many years working in the UK and overseas.

Her expertise enables traditional communication techniques to complement the very latest in digital technology and the bolt-ons Web 2.0 has to offer, including social-networking sites, blogs and video-sharing sites.

Sally's key area of responsibility at MGS is external communication and reputation management; she is responsible for progressing and managing the School's communication and on-line strategy.  Her role also includes: management of visual house style; management of speakers for major events; the design and production of all printed and digital material; content and design management of the School website and bolt-ons; the writing and production of MGS News; event publicity and advertising, and the handling of media and press activity.

Last year saw the introduction of mgsMESSENGER designed to 'hoot' the latest news to the boys highlighting just a few of the clubs and activities happening each day at MGS.  Her latest project is mgsTV - launched in October - a bespoke platform similar to iPlayer created to showcase films produced by the boys, staff and professional companies.

Sally is working with Simon Jones, Director of Development, on the digital platforms and printed literature being produced for the next campaign and as the School progresses towards its 500 year celebrations planned for 2015.

She is supported in her role by a full-time PR Assistant and a Sixth Form Communication Officer.

As part of the School's Outreach Programme, Sally offers a free
PR & Communication consultancy service to other schools and businesses.

Personal message from the Director of Public Relations

I am often asked why a school as prestigious as The Manchester Grammar School needs ‘marketing’.  MGS does not market itself as such, but as with any organisation, we need to ensure that our audience has a good understanding of exactly what The Manchester Grammar School represents and to make it as easy as possible for anyone wishing to apply, either as a pupil or a member of staff.  This task forms the basis of my role here at the School.

Even though we have existed as a school in Manchester for nearly 500 years, we are never complacent; we never assume that those in our communities know of our existence simply because of our longevity and our reputation.  We embrace the fact that we cannot improve our reputation simply by claiming to have a good one, and understand that reputation is based solely on external perceptions and conventions.

MGS public relations and reputation management is about gaining an understanding of our audience and ensuring that our messages are clear and consistent in order to alleviate confusion.  It is about reaching out to our audience, telling our stories through local newspapers, magazines and our website, encouraging people to come to the School and talk freely to our boys and our staff at any time during the academic year to see for themselves what MGS does and has been doing since it was founded in 1515.

Chartered Institute of Public Relations Definition

Public relations is about reputation - the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.

Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.
