New Islington Free School
Background information for parents
The name of the Manchester Grammar School has long been synonymous with education of the highest quality. It is also a fundamental part of the ethos of the School to strive to make access to that education possible irrespective of the ability of parents to pay our fees and, to that end, we continue to work tirelessly to increase the amount of bursary funding available. It remains the case though that very many children cannot benefit from what we have to offer either because they cannot pass our entrance assessments, or because they are a girl, or because they cannot be funded.
We have recently been presented with an opportunity to extend our influence and ethos into a sphere that will allow children who would otherwise be very unlikely to benefit from an MGS education to enjoy some of what we offer to your sons.
New Islington is a millennium regeneration project in central Manchester. A new primary school is proposed for New Islington which it is hoped will admit its first pupils in 2014. It will be a Free School which means it will be funded in full by central government but controlled and run by an independent exempt charity working through a board of governors. Working in conjunction with partners Urban Splash and Manchester City Council, MGS has been advising on the educational aspects of the project. Our vision for the School is that it will provide the best education possible for the children; boys and girls, clever and less so, who live in the New Islington area.
An application to establish the School will be made to DfE in February 2012. The governing body of the School will comprise representatives of the partner organisations but be under the overall control of MGS appointed governors. The School will be called New Islington Free School.
It is envisaged that there will be contact between New Islington Free School and MGS at a variety of levels, just as there is with many state run primary schools at present. The School will present a range of co-curricular opportunities for MGS boys, and use of some MGS facilities will likewise provide opportunities for New Islington pupils. MGS will not ‘own’ the School and there will be no financial burden on MGS beyond what we already commit to our Outreach operation.
We have recently completed a review of the whole of our Outreach commitments. Our conclusion is that a refocusing of our activities is now appropriate and our support of New Islington Free School will be a significant feature of the new framework.
Any pupils of New Islington Free School who apply for a place at MGS will be subject to the same selection criteria as pupils from any other school.
The New Islington Free School will be situated in the Ancoats area of Manchester where Hugh Oldham, our founder, is thought to have been born: this adds a special resonance to the project as we approach our 500th anniversary in 2015.
