Oxbridge Success throughout the North

Wilmslow Express, Thursday 18 February

Wilmslow's talented young academics have figured strongly in The Manchester Grammar School's stunning year for offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities.

This year MGS has a total of 35 boys who have won offers to England's two oldest seats of learning.  The numbers confirm MGS's reputation as the top school in the North for successful Oxbridge admissions with the five boys from Wilmslow some of the very strongest performers.

Pictured standing from left to right are: Tristan Honeyborne, 18, from Overhill Road, who has an offer to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics from Magdalen College, Oxford. The Chair of MGS's Christian Union, Tristan has climbed Mont Blanc and represented Greater Manchester at Cross Country.  Ultimately he wants to go into Politics.

Martin Jackson, 17, has an offer to read Engineering at Churchill College, Cambridge and needs an A star and three As to win his place.

Sam Keeler, 18, from Turnberry Drive, has an offer to read French and Russian from New College, Oxford, and ultimately wants to work as a foreign correspondent.

Chris Yen, 17, from Stanneylands Road, Styal, has an offer to read Natural Sciences at St John's College, Cambridge and wants to work in the rapidly developing biotech sector.

While talented pianist Adam Chai, 18, from Maplewood Road, has an offer to read Chemical Engineering at Pembroke College, Cambridge.

Middleton Guardian

Deep thinker Adam Chekroud has won an offer from New College, Oxford, to read Experimental Psychology.  The 17-year-old Manchester Grammar School student from Wellens Way, Middleton, hopes to use first degree as a stepping-stone to a place at the Harvard Business School.  Adam is a young man of many talents having reached the national finals of the student investor competition and won a series of public speaking and debating competitions.

Bolton Evening News

Bolton young academic and community worker Kort Egan has won an offer from Gonville and Caius College Cambridge to read Theology and Religious Studies.  As well as being one of The Manchester Grammar School's top academics, Kort, 17 from Avenhead Close, Harwich, has worked for the school Community Action Programme for the last five years, and this year is helping to coordinate over 100 volunteers working in eight primary schools across Manchester.

Our role is to listen to children read, work with through maths exercises and help the teachers, said Kort.  He added: I hope it helps the children, I have to say I have gained an immense amount from the experience. It's really rewarding to see a child develop and gain confidence.  After his Cambridge degree, Kort hopes to go on to Harvard to study for his doctorate.

Oldham Chronicle

Chadderton young academic David Bickerstaffe hopes his offer from Trinity College Oxford to study Engineering will be the first step to a career working on the design of the internal combustion engine.
The 17-year-old Manchester Grammar School pupil first needs to get three As in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics. David, from Owler Lane, is no stranger to top marks having gained 8 stars in his GCSEs, including a 100% mark in Italian, taking the full course in only eight months.

Stockport Express

A dazzling duo of Stockport young academics from The Manchester Grammar School have won offers to Cambridge University.

Christian Preece, 17, from Beechfield Road, Cheadle Hulme, has an offer to read Geography at St Catharine's College, Cambridge. Captain of the MGS cross-country team, Christian has represented the North-West at Biathlon.

Raiyan Azmi, 17, from Wittenbury Road, Heaton Moor, has an offer to read Linguistics at Downing College, Cambridge and wants to work in academia.

Christian and Raiyan are among 35 successful Oxbridge candidates, confirming the MGS's reputation as the top school in the North for Oxbridge admissions.

Warrington Guardian

Warrington's talented young academics have figured strongly in The Manchester Grammar School's stunning year for offers from Oxford and Cambridge universities.

Pictured standing from left to right are:  Ben Plumb, 17, from Appleton, who has an offer to read Philosophy, from Jesus College, Cambridge. An adventurer, Ben has climbed Mt Kilimanjaro and wants to work for the United Nations.

William Cook, 17, from High Legh, has an offer to read Mathematics with Physics from Trinity College, Cambridge. William was a key member of the MGS Mathematics team that reached last year's national final and ultimately wants to work in research.

Mark Salib, 18, from Appleton, has an offer to read Theology at St. Benet's Hall, Oxford, and wants to work as a television documentary director.

While Sam King, 18, from Stockton Heath, has an offer to read Medicine at Wadham College, Oxford. Sam was a top ten performer in iGCSE Mathematics and wants to become a consultant paediatrician, working in South America.
