MGS A-level results among the nation's best

a-level_students

South Manchester Reporter
Friday 27 August 2010

Manchester Grammar School achieved record A Level results with an astonishing 97% A*, A and B grades.

Over 32% of all grades awarded to MGS students were at the new A*, nearly five times the national average. Almost 75% of grades were A or A*, compared up from 70% last year
Once again, over half of MGS’s A level students achieved ‘straight’ A grades while more than 20 MGS students gained three or more A* grades.

Indeed, six achieved four A* grades, five achieved five A*s and one gained six A*s.

Pictured are just some of MGS’s high flyers from Sale and Altrincham. Tim Moyo, 18, from Queens Road, Hale, will read Russian and Czech at University College, Oxford, after gaining three straight A stars.

Alex Law, 18. from Winston Close, Sale, gained four A stars and will read Classics at Corpus Christi College,  Oxford. Kai Man Cheung, 18, from Mosley Road, Timperley, will read Engineering at Robinson College, Cambridge, after gaining three A stars and an A. Alex Lee, 18, from Greenhill Avenue, Sale, will read Engineering at Peterhouse, Cambridge after gaining five A stars.

James Campbell, 18, from Kings Acre Bowdon, gained four A stars and one A and will read Natural Sciences at Robinson College, Cambridge. Thomas Lindsay, 18, from Heald Road, Bowdon, gained four A stars and will read Medicine at Edinburgh.

High Master, Dr Christopher Ray, said: MGS remains among a relatively small number of schools which achieve an academic performance better than 95% B grade or better at A-level. In fact, last year only three schools north of Oxford achieved anything like this level of performance.

What is most encouraging is the fact that the School has continued to improve academically at a time when university entrance is becoming increasingly competitive. The vast majority of our students gain access to the very best universities the UK has to offer including, Oxford, Cambridge, UCL, Imperial, Nottingham, Manchester and Birmingham.

MGS has always been a strong route to study Maths, Sciences and Modern Foreign Languages and this year is no exception, with high numbers going on to study in these specialist areas at university.

Worsley teenager Daniel Caplin is hoping his three A stars and one A grade will be the first step to a career working for the European Union.

A student at The Manchester Grammar School, Daniel, 18, from Broad Oak Road, will now study Spanish and Portuguese at St. Catharine’s College, Cambridge.  He said: I have family in Spain, but I was also really turned on to the Latin culture by the writings of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and think the Latins have a powerful manner of communication and almost magical imagination.

Daniel, who is jazz guitarist and talented basketball player, added: I hope to teach first, but I would love to work for the EU and help build a stronger and more prosperous Europe.
