Record year for GCSE results too!

South Manchester Reporter
Friday 3 September 2010

Manchester Grammar School enjoyed record GCSE results with 89% of all grades at A* and A and an astonishing 55% at the top A* grade.

MGS's A* to C pass rate was 99.5%, with 47 students gaining 9 or more A*s, and 24 gaining 10 or more A*s.

110 students of the year group of 193 (57%) gained straight A grades, while the number of students achieving national benchmark of at least 5 A*-C grades was as usual 100%.

Two of the brightest stars were from Didsbury each gaining an astonishing 10 A*s each: Squash player and coach Chris Thom now hopes to use his results as a stepping stone to a career in Chemical Engineering, while Mark Maguire wants to take a Law degree and ultimately work in Government.

High Master, Dr Christopher Ray, said: I am delighted that in this record year for our GCSE students the vast majority of these are in a tremendous position to start Sixth Form work with confidence and, in due course, to impress university admissions tutors.

With 110 students achieving straight A grades or better and a further 31 achieving A grades or better in all but one subject, this has been a terrific year for our students. Indeed, 47 students have at least nine A* grades and, of these, 24 have A*s in all the ten subjects taken.

Performances in a number of subjects have been exceptional. Nine subjects have achieved better than 90% A*A: Art & Design 2D and 3D, English, English Literature, Greek, Latin, Mathematics, Music, and Russian, with Electronics and Chemistry just a touch below this target level.

MGS has always had a thriving Jewish community and pictured here are two of the many who received excellent results again this year.

On the left Jeremy Bernstein, 16, from Planetree Road, Hale, gained 10 A stars, with the top A grade in Further Maths and a distinction in Critical Thinking. A French horn player who already has his silver Duke of Edinburgh award, Jeremy wants a career either in science or the City.

Charlie Mason, 16, from Park Road, Bowdon, also gained 10 straight A stars with the top A grade in Further Mathematics. Charlie would like to go to a top university and then work abroad.

High Master, Dr Christopher Ray, commented: For IGCSE Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, the achievements of our candidates are five to ten per cent above performances in the same subjects before our move to IGCSE from home-based GCSEs. We are delighted that our boys continue to rise to the more serious challenges of this examination.

Richard Geiger, 16, hopes to combine his study with his sporting loves of football and water polo.

While tennis player Adam Khattar, 16, from Crabtree Avenue, Hale Barns, will be studying maths and the sciences in the Sixth Form.

MGS High Master Christopher Ray, however, still believes there is room for improvement in his School’s results. Dr Ray said: MGS has generally performed at or around 85% in terms of the proportion of A* and A grades achieved for seven or eight years. However, with almost 89% for the first time MGS is closer to our target of 90% than ever before.

Dr Ray added: We may be looking for even more from our overall results, but no one could ask more from these hard working young men from Sale and Altrincham who are to be congratulated on their wonderful grades.
