Academic Life

The Manchester Grammar School is renowned internationally for its academic excellence and the incredible breadth and quality of the co-curricular activities on offer; we are extremely proud of our pupils and their successes, both in school and beyond.

We aim for the widest possible social access – admitting boys through our entrance examination and assessments regardless of social, cultural, religious and financial background and our bursary scheme is one of the best in the country.

We encourage our pupils to think for themselves, to ask difficult questions, but also to contribute as they progress through the School; we believe that people come first and operate on the basis of mutual respect.

Some of the country’s finest teachers work with our boys in class sizes of 20-26, with sets half that size in the Sixth Form.  The new Junior Section allows the area’s brightest young talent to blossom, without the straightjacket of examination coaching. Junior boys are accepted through assessment rather than examination, and gain automatic entry to the Senior Section at age 11.

MGS offers the International GCSE to provide a more testing and relevant challenge and Sixth Form offers a choice of A-levels or International Baccalaureate and our results speak for themselves. This year 95% of grades at A-level were either A or B with 38 young men going on to Oxbridge colleges; one of the best Oxbridge entrance results nationwide. This year two students have accepted offers from Harvard.  Similarly at GCSE and IGCSE, results were up again with needs adding of grades at either A* or A.

Our pupils' preparation for the highly competitive world of university entry starts young. We educate like with like, and it is normal for boys at MGS to want to do well. Our excellent teachers are able to go well beyond the relatively narrow limits of examination specifications. We encourage our pupils to recognize that admissions tutors (and, later, employers) look for people who are self-confident, and who can think quickly and independently.

We have – and utilize to the full – close links with local and national careers agencies, all the major professions and all of the leading universities, as well as extensive links with local and national industry.
