Pupils at MGS are introduced to visual arts and design through creative practical projects. They explore a range of media and ideas learn about artists, designers and movements, and develop vocabulary and practical skills. Pupils are taught across a suite of 7 rooms from a pottery to a computer studio.
In the Junior School pupils will experience a range of 2D and 3D media through projects and exercises, which are creative, engaging and dynamic.
Lower School pupils in 2009/10 have embarked upon a new curriculum which introduces formal elements, key vocabulary, and a range of techniques and how to control and manipulate media through drawing, painting, printmaking and 3D work. If pupils choose to study Art and Design in Year 9 they will produce both 2D and a 3D project work, explore more advanced media and develop greater independent research and analysis skills. We celebrate pupil work and achievement with displays, exhibitions and artist of the week rewards.

At GCSE we currently offer Fine Art and 3D Studies courses. Pupils can continue to study the subject at A-level and IB adding greater depth and independent development across the facilities.
The abundance of lunchtime workshops and after school clubs includes fields such as pottery, graphics, life-drawing, painting and photography. As well as pupil initiatives and oversubscribed pottery club. Pupils regularly exhibit work in school and in local and national art and design competitions and exhibitions including the Living Edge Competition and the Lowry and the RA Summer online exhibition. The department manages the school gallery space. In 2010 11 exhibitions include Always Learning exploring the connections between the pupils and artist teachers’ work and process and Under the Microscope with considers cross curricular ideas within practical and creative work.
We pride ourselves on the variety of work and new media, developments include a CAD/CAM laser cutter used for artwork and robotics, photographic screen and etching print facilities.
Most of the staff are practicing artists and include Jo Dobbs, the creator of Purple Ronnie, and Head of Department, Lisa Murphy, who has a portrait of the Queen held in the Royal Collection. Both the teachers and technicians offer specialist knowledge in ceramics, painting, printmaking, design, photography, jewellery and resistant material.
