Head of Department - Anna Wicking BA (Hons)

Biology is a rapidly developing science very much related to the problems of modern life and the courses offered here at MGS reflect this.
Students who study biology through to a more advanced level will be well equipped to pursue a higher qualification in Natural Sciences, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine or Forensics to name but a few. In addition to the high academic standards, students can expect a range of extra-curricular opportunities such as visiting museums, attending lectures, participating in external courses and listening to guest speakers. It is proposed, in the near future, to offer a residential field trip as well as an international expedition to all students in the Sixth Form.
Biology is studied as a separate subject from Year 9 onwards and is initially geared towards the pupils gaining an IGCSE qualification. Thereafter, students can choose to study for a traditional A-level or an International Baccalaureate at Standard of Higher Level.
Biology is housed in an independent area with its own laboratories and specialist staff. There are three purpose-built laboratories for Middle School teaching and two specialist laboratories for the Sixth Form. The teaching staff include eight full-time and one part-time specialist Biologists who are supported by three full-time technicians.
In a recent departmental inspection, the quality of teaching and learning was described as Outstanding or Good in the majority of lessons.
Many of the staff have extensive external academic experience, peer-review publishing experience, and deleted have previously lectured at University as well as having close ties with academic or biological organisations in a consultancy or advisory capacity. Some staff are also in the process of completing higher degrees which reflects the high esteem and commitment to excellence and continued improvement within the department.
MGS Sixth Form students are encouraged to take part in the National Biology Olympiad and have enjoyed considerable success over the years. Also available to pupils are the Middle School Natural History Society, the Lower school General Science Club and the Philosophical Society for sixth formers; the latter being an entirely student run society embracing all three sciences with lectures from many leading national figures in science and medicine.

Below are a few images taken from Genotype to Phenotype A-level study day at Manchester Museum. 22 Biology students came to Manchester Museum to talk to scientists researching the importance of the extracellular matrix and explore an appliance of new technology in this field - dwarfism in mice!
