Head of Department - Helen Jones BA

The Economics Department at MGS was established in 2008 and has grown rapidly since then, with over a hundred boys currently studying the subject at A-level or as part of the IB. Many join us as a first step to an Economics-based degree or to complement their study of other social sciences. Equally, many study Economics as a ‘fourth’ subject alongside Mathematics and the Sciences, to broaden their Sixth Form experience. Members of the department also contribute taster courses to the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme.
In the Lower Sixth, AS-level and IB students receive a grounding in economic theory. In microeconomics, the focus is on supply and demand and the role government can play in ameliorating free market outcomes. In macroeconomics, students are introduced to key performance indicators of the national economy – growth, unemployment, inflation and others – and the ways in which government can achieve its objectives. In the Upper Sixth, our students raise their sights to the global level. They are equipped to examine the challenging economic questions of our time, such as “Is the government cutting too much, too quickly?” or “Can the Euro survive in its current form?”
Although Economics is only taught in the Sixth Form, the department provides co-curricular opportunities throughout the School, including Junior Traders and Young Traders (for Year 7) clubs; an enterprise option during Activities Week for Years 8 and 9; and the Model United Nations club for Years 10 to 13. Year 12s can participate in the Young Enterprise programme and Year 13s in the Bank of England’s Target Two Point Zero competition.
The Economics Society was set up last year and a wide range of speakers – economists, bankers, corporate lawyers, traders, entrepreneurs and university economics tutors – visit the School regularly to talk to students. All inspire our boys to see Economics as a dynamic, real world-centred subject and one which has such diverse applications that it constantly keeps them thinking, challenged and engaged.
