Since the introduction of electronics to the MGS syllabus two and a half years ago, enthusiasm for the subject has grown tremendously. Numbers began in 2007 with 85 boys in total involved in electronics and these have now grown to 178 in 2009/2010: Ten Lower Sixth students are currently undertaking AS, not having studied the subject at GCSE; Thirty Year 11 boys are our first cohort to sit GCSE, with 30 pupils in the Year 10 cohort and 108 in Year 9.
One of our Upper Sixth students is undertaking the first ever extended project in robotics for A-level, while another - who although he has not studied electronics officially - helped to organise the new AS teaching lab built robots, including the 'walker' as illustrated above.
AQA currently have 630 GCSE entrants for the electronics science based course, which makes MGS a major player in this newly introduced subject.
The course consists of 40% coursework and MGS Head of Department, Mark Hesketh, is an AQA GCSE coursework moderator.
