Head of Department - Paul Wheeler BSc
MGS encourages awareness of the landscape around us, recognition of how the environment may influence our lives and how people may influence the environment for better or worse. Key geographical skills are taught including data collection in the field. Life in Britain is contrasted with that in other countries and pupils enabled to understand the problems facing the less economically developed nations.
Pupils in Lower School study the School's catchment area and the issues facing the region. They develop skills in map work and weather forecasting, as well as studying rocks and the National Parks. In Year 8 focus is on Global issues, including ecosystems, the environment and the development of globalisation through topics such as football and fashion and there is emphasis on research projects.
In Middle School boys carry out field work in Manchester and North Wales. For IGCSE studies are made of glaciation, rivers, resources and tourism, settlement and agriculture. A-level Geography includes several days of fieldwork and involves topics as diverse as burglary and transmittable diseases.
Pupils are able to join junior and senior geographical societies and Sixth formers attend meetings of the Manchester Geographical Association.
The department is very well equipped, with facilities which include a computer laboratory with satellite receiver for weather forecasting, external weather station, comprehensive map collection, a laboratory for soil analysis and a flume for simulating river processes. Extensive use is made of ICT with interactive white boards.
