Head of Department - Neil Smith BA

The History Department at MGS aims to encourage an appreciation of the past, promoting the enjoyment of its rediscovery. It develops the critical skills of our pupils necessary to use and interpret historical sources and foster an appreciation of their cultural heritage. The diversity of teaching styles in the Lower School makes learning a pleasure. Year 7 pupils visit a castle with topics including the Norman Conquest, Black Death and Peasants' Revolt. In Year 8 boys study the Tudors and Stuarts. Year 9 students undertake an internet-based exercise focusing on the assassination of President John F Kennedy. Other topics studied include the First World War and Modern America. For IGCSE, students study the Russian Revolution, inter-war Germany and Italy and Modern China. A-level topics embrace the Medieval period, Tudors and Stuarts, post-war British History and Twentieth Century American and European History. IB History focuses on the Modern World and Europe.
The department is famous for it vast array of trips, including day trips to castles and museums, and history tours to destinations at home and abroad, including the battlefields of northern France and Belgium and sites in North America. The Junior and Senior Historical Societies meet regularly. The Department is host to the Manchester Schools History Society which provides a programme of lectures for all interested sixth-form students in the Manchester area. The inaugural meeting took place in September 2006 with a visit by Professor Sir Ian Kershaw. Nine members of staff are housed in a departmental area which boasts an exclusive source library of specialist books, an excellent video/DVD collection and data projectors. Recent work by members of the department includes publishing biographies, historical monographs and A-level history text books. Please view examples here

History Department Library and Drop-in
The History Department has ‘created’ a history library in room 25, which will be open for pupils from all year groups each Monday 1.10-1.55pm. Pupils may take books out on loan, or simply read articles from our diverse and interesting collection of books and journals. The room will be available for study at other times, but books can only be taken out when a member of the department is present. The library will be supervised by a member of staff and sixth form historians, who will also be available to provide advice to pupils on matters relating to their historical studies. If any pupil would like help with particular elements of their history course, they can use the ‘drop-in’ service in addition to discussing any issues with their history teacher.
