Seventeen highly qualified, full-time teachers bring mathematics to life for MGS pupils, helping them to develop both logical thought and mental agility in problem solving, along with an awareness of the importance of mathematics as a basis for the study of other subjects.
We believe it is essential that we increase our pupils' confidence in using mathematics; these skills are essential for everyday life. MGS runs a scheme whereby senior boys can mentor younger pupils who experience particular difficulties in their work. We place great emphasis on mental arithmetic, which is regularly assessed.
In the Lower School boys (Years 7 and 8) are taught in sets at a stimulating pace matched to the ability they have shown in the Entrance Examination. During this time all our pupils are brought up to the same level and their knowledge and understanding is developed in a large range of topics, including many not covered by the National Curriculum.
All boys take the IGCSE in Year 11 and some may also take Foundations of Advanced Mathematics (FSMQ). In the Sixth Form students can follow a very flexible A-level course, with the option of Further Mathematics, or they can study Mathematics at Standard or Higher Level through the International Baccalaureate programme.
Mathematics has its own Moodle site. Pupils can access information via the internet from anywhere in the world.
There are two maths clubs – Eureka! for Lower School boys, and Pi shop. Here talks on mathematical challenges are given by staff and Sixth Form students.
Our Mathematics results are among the very best in the country. Read our latest results here

Our pupils compete in national and international Mathematics challenges at junior, intermediate and senior levels.
Senior Maths Challenge
Each year our pupils enter the Senior Maths Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust and aimed at those aged 16-19.
In the 2010/2011 Challenge our pupils achieved 17 Golds, 43 Silvers and 35 Bronzes. 95,750 pupils from the UK sat the Challenge with approx 6% receiving Gold, the next 13% Silver and the next 21% Bronze. The average number of Gold awards to schools was 2-3.
The top 1,000 students eligible to represent the UK at the International Mathematical Olympiad are invited to sit the follow-on competition, the British Mathematical Olympiad Round one.
Five MGS boys have qualified: Upper Sixth students Daniel Hyman and Charlie Zou, Lower Sixth student Dajian Chen and Year 11 students Pishun Tantivangphaisal and Dylan Sidle.

Five MGS Maths Marvels!
Whitefield number cruncher Daniel Hyman is going for gold after qualifying for selection for the UK Mathematics Trust’s Senior Maths Challenge.
Daniel is one of five Manchester Grammar School sixth form pupils going forward to the first Olympic qualifying round, which will be hosted in the Netherlands next summer.

Old Mancunian, Sir Michael Francis Atiyah, OM, FRS, FRSE
Listen to former pupil and prize winning mathematician Sir Michael Atiyah reminiscing over his time at MGS studying mathematics here.
Sir Michael's best known result, the Atiyah–Singer index theorem, was proved with Singer in 1963 and is widely used in counting the number of independent solutions to some differential equations. Some of his more recent work was inspired by theoretical physics, in particular instantons and monopoles, which are responsible for some subtle corrections in quantum field theory. He was awarded the Fields Medal in 1966, the Copley Medal in 1988, and the Abel Prize in 2004.
