The Modern Foreign Languages Department at MGS is one of the largest and most successful in the country offering our pupils French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese, Russian and Spanish.

In the first two years all pupils study one language chosen from the range available.  We do our best to ensure that all our boys are given their first choice but, in the unlikely event that this is not possible, there will be the opportunity to take up the language as pupils enter their third year.

Year 9 pupils can also opt to study additional languages.  By this stage our boys are aware of language learning skills and can easily reach the standard required to achieve top grades at GCSE in three years. MGS regards the study of languages very highly and all pupils take at least one language at GCSE level in Year 11.

All our core languages are offered to A-level and in addition, within the Sixth Form Enrichment Programme, pupils have the opportunity to study and subject to availability to take taster courses in languages such as Arabic, Catalan, Czech, Modern Greek, and Portuguese.

MGS staff teaching in the MFL Department are passionate about their subjects and the importance of learning languages.  The department is the largest in the School and many MFL teachers hold senior roles as examiners and work developing new national qualifications.

Our facilities include two state of the art, digital language laboratories.  We also have satellite television, computers and projectors in all classrooms, audio and video recording, foreign newspapers and magazines and large book collections.

Language learning is not confined to the classroom at MGS.  Our dynamic team of MFL Assistants ensures that our pupils have plenty of opportunity to speak with native speakers of the languages they are learning.  We also run clubs, competitions and regular exchanges for boys and there are trips with destinations including Paris, Dijon, Moscow, St Petersburg, Berlin, Wuhan, Munich, Augsburg, Vienna, Madrid, Mallorca, Mexico and Cuba.

We are keen for pupils the Junior School to enjoy language learning and gain a good insight into how languages are learnt.  In Year 5 pupils try Latin and in Year 6 pupils have the chance to spend a year learning Italian.
