Director of Music - Robert Carey MA

In their early years at MGS, students can expect to receive class tuition covering a wide variety of music’s practical aspects. Following this, boys have the opportunity to continue their musical studies, with courses offered at IGCSE, A-level and IB. Many MGS boys have then gone on to study at conservatoire or read Music at university.
Music theory lessons are also available to all students on Friday mornings, before school. Here boys are able to learn up to ABRSM Grade 5 and need only pay for the materials they use.
Not only does the Music Department provide lunchtime concerts, they also organise Christmas and Easter performances. These give budding young musicians, from all sections of the school, the chance to demonstrate their abilities as they perform large ensembles to a live audience.
Many other opportunities are available for students to showcase their musical talent. To find out more please follow this link to our Performances page.
Further instrumental and singing tuition is also available to MGS students for the following instruments; Strings (Violin, Viola, Cello, Double Bass) Wind (Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Bassoon, Saxophone) Brass (French horn, trumpet, trombone, baritone & euphonium) Percussion (Drum-kit and orchestral percussion)
This tuition is provided through peripatetic teachers all of whom are professional musicians themselves.
The Music Department also organises a variety of tours, the most recent of which have involved the Choir, Close Harmony, Stravaganza and the Jazz Band. To listen to some of the recordings taken from the MGS Close Harmony Group during their 2010 Dorset Tour, as well as other musical performances, please follow this link.
It is the Department’s aspiration that Music at MGS should be enjoyable, stimulating and productive - right from day one. We aim to offer opportunities both to the enthusiastic amateur and to the more seriously committed instrumentalist or singer.
