Head of Department - Simon Hunt MA

Physics is studied as a separate subject from Year 9, when we begin teaching the EdExcel IGCSE course, through to A-level – AQA Physics Syllabus A.
We also offer IB Physics at both Higher and Standard levels. The department has recently seen the introduction of Electronics, which is now being offered as a Year 8 option, a GCSE course and, from September 2009, as an A-level.
The Physics Department has eight specialist teachers (plus the High Master), three technicians, five laboratories and three lecture labs. One of the labs doubles as an ICT suite, allowing data logging experiments and we share a further 10 laptops with Electronics.
The department has close links with Oxford University, Manchester University and CERN and it includes a senior member of the Royal Astronomical Society and a principal examiner.
Competitive World
Each year boys in years 11 and Lower Sixth enter the GCSE and AS Physics Challenges, sister competitions to the Olympiad, where we also enjoy frequent medal success. Upper Sixth MGS students have competed with great success in the national Physics Olympiad, regularly winning Gold and Silver Awards. In 2008 Michael Lipton and Michael Jerred both made it through to the final 16 nationally and attended the final selection stage "boot camp" at Oxford University. Michael Lipton went on the represent Great Britain in Korea, finally achieving an international bronze medal.
Diversity of staff
Everyone in the department also plays a strong role within the co-curricular life of the School including: a martial arts master; a choral conductor; a roboticist; a jazz pianist; a DofE leader; two choral singers; two jugglers; a fire eater; a board games and role-playing enthusiast and the treasurer of the Association for Astronomy Education (who runs the Astronomical Society, the telephone system and the Alumni Database).
Philosophical Society
The Society is mainly for sixth formers, embraces all three sciences and features lectures from many leading national figures in science and medicine. The Society is entirely pupil-run and believed to be the oldest school society in the country.
