Religion & Philosophy

Head of Department  - Dennis Brown BD STM MLitt

MGS aims to provide an understanding of the beliefs and practices of the major world religions on individual and collective moral behaviour, attitudes and lifestyle. Through religious studies we encourage pupils to explore the nature of religion, and to search for meaning and purpose in life by tackling the ultimate questions of human existence.
In Years 7 and 8, we draw on the religious and cultural diversity of the School itself.  Our pioneering course is carefully adapted to the ability and interests of our pupils.  We study aspects of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism.  In later years, boys study aspects of the major faiths from a philosophical perspective.
Our approach is academic, with many opportunities for pupil-led investigation. Philosophical ideas are explored in discussion.
In the Middle School, we use our own specially written and exciting course in the Philosophy of Religion for Year 9 boys. For GCSE pupils study Buddhism plus either Islam, Judaism or Christianity.
In Years 10 and 11, all boys follow a course in Philosophy and Critical Thinking, which includes some important and influential figures in the history of ideas, as well as a rigorous, skill-based introduction to Critical Thinking.

We offer Religious Studies and Philosophy as separate A-level subjects, in addition to AS Level Critical Thinking. In RS, we study the philosophy of religion and the relationship between religion, science, psychology and human experience.  Philosophy looks at the nature of human beings, the philosophy of mind, and an analysis of a philosophical text (Descartes or Hume). The department is also involved in the delivery of the International Baccalaureate, offering Philosophy at both Higher and Standard level, as well as the compulsory Theory of Knowledge course.
Several members of the department have had books and articles published, whilst some play a senior role as examiners. All are specialists in the subject, enthusiastic in their teaching, and keen that boys should find RS and Philosophy interesting, challenging and fun!
