Currently our Junior Section is made up of Years 5 and 6; from September 2011 this will also include Years 3 and 4. (Please see our press release below for further information.)

Our curriculum is exciting; innovative; stimulating; cutting-edge; different and blends our traditional 'grammar school' education with unusual challenges designed to stretch even the most able young man.
We teach the basics thoroughly along with a wide range of skill based activities to seek to broaden the mind and develop natural inquisitiveness. Enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff from the Junior Section provide the majority of the teaching with additional classroom input from Senior School subject specialists in areas such as English, Maths, Art and Modern Foreign and Classical Languages.

The boys have a fantastic opportunity to widen their knowledge and develop new skills during our timetabled Wednesday afternoon 'Options Programme', including, for example, Photography, Robotics, Roman Civilisation, Philosophy and Psychology; and also through the varied co-curricular (lunchtimes and after school) activities such as Basketball, Judo, Warhammer, Rugby, Cookery and Gardening. Teamwork, social skills and confidence all develop quickly through involvement with these activities.

Our first year as the new Junior Section of MGS passed in a blur of activity and excitement! Staff and pupils together have quickly established an ethos of hard work, mutual respect and a joy in discovering and learning together.

Press Release
Tuesday 15 December 2009

Bexwyke Lodge, our Junior Section for boys aged 9 to 11, was opened in September 2008.
Last year over 90 joined the Section in its first year. We now have over 100 boys either with us or about to join us immediately after Christmas. The five classes of our Junior Section are, therefore, full for the current year.
We have received very many enquiries from parents asking whether or not MGS will provide places for younger boys, just as the High School and Withington have classes for younger girls.
Our governors have considered carefully all aspects of an expansion of the Junior Section and have decided that MGS will admit boys into Years 3 and 4 (ie at ages 7 and 8) as from September 2011. This is the youngest age that we believe will still allow us to guarantee progress to the senior sections on the basis of our assessment of academic potential. There is, therefore, no intention to admit pupils younger than seven.
We will assess boys on the basis of a day in school as well as looking carefully at reports provided by current schools, just as we do for entry into Years 5 and 6. Assessments for the two additional years will not begin until the Michaelmas Term 2010.
Boys in Years 3 and 4 will be taught in a separate building adjacent to Bexwyke Lodge. The very special character of the curriculum, the teaching and learning, and the co-curriculum for boys in Years 5 and 6 will be unaffected.
Linda Hamilton will be the Head of all four years in the Junior Section. A Deputy Head of the Junior Section, with specific responsibilities for Years 3 and 4, will be appointed in due course.
If you have any questions about MGS and its Junior Section, do not hesitate to contact our Admissions Team who will be pleased to help.
