Hugh Oldham Lecture 2010

Monday 5 July 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm
The Memorial Hall

We are delighted to announce that the 2010 Lecture will be presented by British hedge-fund manager, Stanley Fink, former Deputy Chairman and CEO of Man Group plc.

Stanley Fink attended MGS and Cambridge where he studied law.  After training as a chartered accountant with Arthur Andersen, he joined Man Group plc in 1987, stepping down as Deputy Chairman of the Group in July 2008 after an illustrious career spanning more than 21 years.

When he joined Man, it was a medium sized private company which was largely an agricultural commodity trading business, with small operations in future broking and hedge fund management.   By March 2007, when Stanley retired as Group CEO, Man had disposed of its agricultural commodity businesses, floated its large brokerage business on the New York Stock Exchange and grown the fund management business to become the largest quoted hedge fund manager in the world.  As of June 2008 it had a stock market capitalisation of US$20 billion and managed alternative assets of US$80 billion.

In September 2008, Stanley joined ISAM (International Standard Asset Management), a new hedge fund group, as CEO.   He is also Chairman of Earth Capital Partners LLP – an environmental fund management firm.

He is a committed philanthropist whose focus is health, education and the environment.  His roles include being a Trustee and now Chairman of ARK (Absolute Return for Kids), a Trustee of the Mayor’s Fund for London and was Chairman of the 2009 Lord Mayor’s Appeal.  Stanley was chairman of the highly successful campaign by the Evelina Children’s Hospital Appeal to raise £10 million to assist in equipping the new hospital.   He is also chair of the board of governors of Burlington Danes Academy School which he sponsored through ARK.

Stanley is currently co-treasurer of the Conservative Party.

This is a ticketed event, open to the public; please email our Director of Public Relations, Sally-Anne Rogers, if you wish to reserve seats for the event. This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The History of The Hugh Oldham Lecture

The Hugh Oldham Lecture was introduced in 2005 by the current High Master, Dr Christopher Ray.  His idea was to create a prestigious event each year on the School calendar, which enabled the educational enrichment of not only our sixth formers, but also sixth form students from as many local schools and colleges in the area as possible.

Each year around 600 students, teaching staff and members of the public attend the Lecture to hear such eminent speakers as the Astronomer Royal, Professor Sir Martin Rees, historian, writer and film maker Michael Wood, and British ethologist, evolutionary biologist and popular science writer, Professor Richard Dawkins and in 2008, Professor Lord Robert Winston, Emeritus Professor of Fertility Studies at Imperial College.  Last year was no exception with Douglas Hurd, Lord Hurd of Westwell, presenting his talk based on his latest book Choose Your Weapons - How Foreign Secretaries Argue, Succeed and Fail.

The day for students begins at 2:15 pm with a selection of workshops and seminars.

The one-hour Lecture begins at 5:30 pm and includes a question and answer session at the end.

All external events are managed by our PR & Communications Manager,
Sally-Anne Rogers.  Please note: the links to our past and current speakers may change.  If you have difficulty with any of the links please email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
