Doors open wider at MGS

The Manchester Grammar School Junior Section is set to expand again after what it terms ‘The spectacular success of its new Junior Section.'

From September 2011, it will admit boys aged seven and eight meaning the Junior Section will now admit boys from Years 3 to 6.

The award winning Bexwyke Lodge, which houses the Junior Section, will be augmented by further state of the art accommodation.

The development follows overwhelming interest from parents.  Linda Hamilton, Head of MGS Junior Section said: We have been inundated with requests from parents with younger boys asking us to admit pupils from age 7.  MGS has nearly 500 years experience at the forefront of education and we are building on that tradition both inside and outside the classroom.  We believe bright boys need to and are able to discover things for themselves, to be involved in their own learning and to be able to come to their own conclusions, putting their own stamp on their learning without the stifling constraints of SATs or entrance examinations.

Linda Hamilton continued:  They will develop a firm foundation of the fundamentals enhanced by a challenging enrichment programme.  All of our boys will be selected for entry to the Junior Section on the basis of extraordinary potential, by observing their individual talents in imaginative lessons and group work, rather than by entrance examination.

High Master, Dr Christopher Ray, said: The boys in the Junior Section have risen magnificently to the serious challenges of MGS. I am delighted that we shall soon be able to broaden the horizons of younger boys.

Applications are already being received for September 2011, alongside applications for Years 5 and 6 in 2010.  Boys admitted to the Junior Section progress naturally and without further hurdles into Year 7 of the Senior Section.

Year 6 pupil, Adib Badri, aged 10 from Cheadle, said:  I wish that I could have joined in Years 3 and 4 because I love the different way of learning. We like the buzz and to bounce ideas of each other.

Oliver Kingsley, in Year 6 last year, was so thrilled by the Junior Section that he wrote to the Queen to ask her if she would visit it.  The School hopes a member of the Royal Family will visit in 2015 when MGS celebrates its 500th anniversary.

Bexwyke Lodge, named after Hugh and Joan Bexwyke, two of the School’s sixteenth century founders, won a Green Apple Award in 2009 for its environmentally friendly design.
