Saddleworth young fencer Charlie Kenyon got straight to the point by winning a bronze medal in an English Boys’ National Fencing Open Championship.
Competing against the cream of the nation’s young sabre fencers, Charlie, a pupil in Manchester Grammar School’s Junior Section, now has his sights set on the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Charlie, aged 10-years-old, from Grasscroft, first started fencing at the age of just six-years-old going down to Tameside Fencing Club with his dad Mark Kenyon, and now continues to train both at his club and with the specialist fencing coaches at The Manchester Grammar School.
He said: You need balance, control and precision to be a top fencer. The last thing you need is aggression, it’s about channeling your mind and body to make the perfect strike.
Charlie added: I’ve just started to beat my dad, but he is still a good opponent.
Linda Hamilton, Head of The Manchester Grammar School’s Junior Section, said: I'm delighted that Charlie has had the opportunity to follow his passion for fencing within our extensive co-curricular programme. One day he may appear as one of our famous sporting alumni.
