Junior Section chess players are forming the spine of the talented Greater Manchester chess team.
From left to right: Nathan Campbell, 11, plays Number Six for his county at Under-11 level; Dale Francis 9, plays Two for the Under-9s, while Tom Rushton plays Seven alongside Nathan.
Nathan and Tom starred in the UK National Championships helping their county to come seventh from the 84 competing teams.
Nathan, 11, began playing the traditional board game at the age of three and said: I like working out all sorts of puzzles and chess is a genuine mind game.
Tom, who was also barely walking when he first learned the basics of the game, added: There are literally hundreds and hundreds of different strategies you can adopt.
Tom, who plays for Didsbury Dynamos, continued: “Chess is fun and exciting and as I am not particularly good at ball sports, it gives me something at which I can excel.”
Dale added: Chess is a game of mental strategy and can be just as exciting as any other sport.
All the boys have been mentored by Manchester coach Julian Clisshold and regularly play with the senior boys at MGS.
