Manchester Grammar School water polo players have earned six of the best with their Under-14 water polo team winning the National Schools’ Championships for the sixth successive year.

Their early morning training sessions paid rich dividends as they beat City of London 8-5 in the finals in Walsall. In earlier rounds the MGS team beat Bolton School 5-1, King Edward’s Birmingham 3-0 and Haberdashers 7-1.

Coached by England Captain Craig Figes, supported by England women stars Ros Griffiths and Rosie Morris, the young men built themselves up for the finals with early morning training sessions before school in the two months before the finals.

Pictured in the centre is Captain and England international James Salt, who with 11 goals in the tournament shared the top scorer award with Matt Geiger (right) and on the left, man of the tournament goalkeeper Andy Osikoya.

Simon Jones, Head of MGS Water Polo, said: Water polo is the second most demanding sport on the cardiovascular system only behind the triathlon, so the boys have to become as fit as possible to compete and once again their dedication has been superb.

Also pictured are squad members Sam Hanrahan, David Moores, Charlie Baker, James Jobling, Sinan Kelenchy, Johnny Scurrah, James Moran, Arron Gould, James Hampson, Freddie North and Oliver Nield.
