The system for dealing with lost property is run by volunteers from the Parents’ Society. During every holiday or half term holiday the porters “sweep” the school for lost uniform, bags, sports equipment etc. A team of mums (no dads so far, unfortunately!) then sorts through the pile of lost items.
Anything named is tagged and put into a bin-liner, one for each form in the school. These are collected by form tutors for distribution to their forms. Un-named items are stored in the lost property area in the basement of the main stairwell for two weeks, during which time boys can rummage for their belongings.
After a fortnight the Parents’ Society will take any un-named items of uniform or sports kit for the next second hand sale. Any un-named non-uniform is then given to charity.
Each year we raise about £800 for the school through our second hand sales and give over 80 bin-liners full of clothes/bags to various charities!
If your son has lost uniform or sports kit he should initially look in all the obvious places – the pavilion, changing rooms, sports hall or where he last had it. Often bags are picked up by another boy in error and later dumped on any of the bag racks around school, so get him to check these. Lost items often end up down in the main stairwell basement between “sweeps” so it’s worth checking there. If after a week or so it hasn’t turned up you can contact us and we will ask for an announcement to be made in assembly – this almost always gets results, especially when a commendation is offered as reward!
If your son has grown out of uniform or kit we would be delighted to receive it for our next second hand sale. Donations should be taken to the General Office where there is a cupboard for second hand donations under the counter.
We have a wonderful team of dedicated mums who sort through the lost property mountain every holiday. It normally takes no more than 2 hours and is much more fun than it sounds! We have a good chat and nearly always find something we didn’t realise our own sons had lost. Many bring their sons with them, who are invaluable at deciphering smudged name labels! If you would like to join us in a sorting session, we would love to meet you.
