The Director of Admissions
Rodger Alderson
Rodger has spent most of his life at MGS. He joined the School as a pupil in 1958 and, after studying for his degree in Mathematics and Economics at Cambridge, went on to become a teacher, eventually returning to MGS in 1974. He has held a variety of posts at the School including that of Sports Coordinator, Head of Maths and Head of Lower School before more recently becoming Director of Admissions.
Rodger has always been committed to the philosophy of access for all boys to MGS, and in his new role decided that using purely Entrance Examination assessment did not necessarily select the boys most suited the MGS style of learning. When the Junior Section opened in September 2008, he introduced an innovative method for entry - by seeing boys in a more natural environment at MGS for a full day of teaching and assessment, Rodger saw the possibilities for Year 7+ entry utilising the same process. In 2009, a combination of Entrance Exam and the full day assessment replaced the old system of two separate entrance examinations. The response from boys and parents alike was very positive, and included several compliments from those parents whose son did not gain a place.
The Admissions Manager
Kath joined MGS in 2006 from Bury Grammar School for Boys and worked in the administration office for a year before becoming Admissions Office Manager.
Her working background is diverse: she initially worked in HR in the corporate sector specialising in psychometric testing, is a qualified Dental Nurse formerly undertaking freelance work for BUPA and worked as a Biology Technician whilst at Bury Grammar.
Kath is responsible for the management of all admissions to MGS from Year 5 through to Upper Sixth, along with junior school liaison, working closely with the Director of Admissions.
With a son currently in Upper Sixth at The Manchester Grammar School and a nephew who left us recently, Kath has a good understanding and knowledge of MGS. She would be delighted to answer any questions you may have in relation to entry to the School.
The Admissions Secretary
Fiona joined us in September 2008 to assist our busy Admissions Office.
After obtaining a degree in Russian at the University of Exeter, Fiona worked in the travel industry – initially in the Soviet Union, followed by time in Australia and Asia. On her return to England, she spent many years working as a specialist consultant and sales supervisor at Trailfinders flagship office in London.
Fiona moved with her husband to raise their family in the Peak District and before joining MGS worked for several years as a School Secretary in a local primary school; the family now live in Didsbury.
With sons currently in Year 5 and Year 6, Fiona has inside knowledge of our Junior Section and would be delighted to answer any specific questions related to entry into this area of the School, along with any other admission enquiries.
