This year the theme is Economics and Business Studies, with a strong focus on enterprise and entrepreneurs. We have an impressive array of speakers hosting the seminars and below is the final programme. Seminars begin at 2:45 pm and are repeated at 3:45 pm.

SEMINAR ONE - The Schroder Seminar This seminar is open to MGS parents

Nick Gartside & Neil Bridge – Schroders Not just your Mum clips coupons – how fund managers make money
Nick is Head of Global Fixed Income at Schroders, a global asset
management company with £148.4 billion. Nick is a former MGS pupil and
left in 1993 to study History and Politics at Durham University before
completing an M Phil at Cambridge University in International
Relations.

Neil is Head of UK Sales responsible for managing an eight strong
retails sales team, and the head of the broker liaison desk. He is a
member of the SIL Management Committee and the Distribution Executive
Committee and has responsibility for key strategic partnerships.

SEMINAR TWO - The Manchester Business School Seminar

Peter Kawalek – Manchester Business School Digital Culture – Social change & the experience of entrepreneurs
Peter
is Professor of Information Systems and Strategy at Manchester Business
School. He is also a Visiting Professor at Instituto de Empresa in
Madrid and Letterkenny Institute of Technology in County Donegal. He is
an external examiner at Trinity College, Dublin. Peter's PhD is in
Computer Science. He has experience to board level in media and rail
industries, and works extensively with government, including Office an
Taoiseach, Department of Communities and Local Government, the NHS,
Leeds City Council, Tameside Council and Salford City Council.
In
his talk Peter will explain how to understand technological change and
the way our new digital culture fits the pattern back to printing
press, and beyond. He will illustrate how wide tracts of society today
are challenged by the new technology, giving opportunities for
entrepreneurship. Examples of MBS projects in the classroom and with
companies such as O2 will accompany his talk.

SEMINAR THREE - The JO Hambro Seminar

Ben Leyland – JO Hambro Capital Management A New World for Equity Fund Management
Ben is a former pupil of MGS and left in 1998 to study History at Cambridge. He joined Schroder Investment Management as an equity analyst. In April 2006 he moved to JO Hambro Capital Management, where he co-manages the JOHCM UK Opportunities Fund, a £900m long-only UK equity fund aimed at retail and institutional investors.

SEMINAR FOUR - The Braemar Group Seminar
Marc Duschenes – Braemar Group From School-boy Trader to Entrepreneur
Marc, former MGS pupil and CEO of Braemar, is an award winning entrepreneur who founded the business in 2002. Braemar manages funds and assets in excess of £500m. Following a career in Investment Banking, where Marc was Director of Sales/Trading with Kleinwort Benson Securities, he floated Braemar on AIM in 2005.

SEMINAR FIVE - The Green Tomato Seminar

Jonny Goldstone – Green Tomato When Industry is Ripe for Change
Jonny is a former MGS pupil and left School in 1995 to study law at Cambridge. In 2005, a year into his sought after job as a trainee solicitor at a City law firm, Jonny left and started a taxi company. Today, Green Tomato’s fleet has grown to 110 cars and averages 500 bookings a day. The ultimate goal is to follow the example set by Stelios the Easyjet entrepreneur and become the one-stop-shop for green products and services.

SEMINAR SIX - The OmPrompt Seminar

Terry Byrne – OmPrompt Connectivity – The Supply Chain Dilemma
Terry is co-founder of OmPrompt and currently Senior Director of Customer Solutions. One of the world's leading Cloud Computing technology companies, it received four major awards in recognition of its contribution to Supply Chain connectivity enabling supply chain partners such as Nestlé, to exchange information independent of the messaging format and systems they employ. Terry has also worked for Ericsson, IBM and ICL.

SEMINAR SEVEN - The EV Group Seminar

Jonathan Diggines – EV Group Why take a risk when what you really want is a job?
Jonathan is a venture capitalist and Chief Executive of EV. He is a former MGS pupil leaving in 1971 to study Law at Oxford and is currently a Governor of the School. Jonathan led the team which bought out the publically owned Greater Manchester Buses North for £28m and sold it to FirstGroup two years later for £68m. This session is a Dragons’ Den style workshop, relating to entrepreneurship.

SEMINAR EIGHT - The Leeds University Business School Seminar

Bill Gerrard – Leeds University Business School The Numbers Game –The Prospects for Statistical Performance Analysis in Professional Team Sports
Bill is Professor of Sport Management and Finance. He has worked extensively in the sports industry and pioneered the development of statistical performance analysis in football, rugby league and rugby union. He works with leading teams both in the UK and internationally, advising on the quantitative analysis of player and team performance. He advised the UEFA Task Force on Club Licensing and Salary Caps, and has acted as an expert witness in several legal cases.

SEMINAR NINE - The National Enterprise Seminar

Ewan Rowland – National Enterprise Academy Leadership and Enterprise in Business
Ewan is NW Director of the Academy founded by Dragons Den entrepreneur Peter Jones. The seminar will explore where our productivity comes from and what it takes to be an Entrepreneur? These and related issues such as innovation, investment, skills and competition, and look at why more Entrepreneurs are needed and the connection with leadership.

SEMINAR TEN - The Harvard University Seminar

Sarah Otner – Harvard University Applying to study Economics at Harvard and other American Universities
Sarah is a third-year doctoral candidate in the Department of Management at the London School of Economics (LSE), studying reputation-as-currency and social capital in online innovation communities. Half-American and half-English, Sarah travelled to every continent (except Antarctica!) before her 18th birthday, and considers herself a ‘global citizen’.
