Her role involves all aspects of public relations and reputation management for the School, along with management of major events such as The Hugh Oldham, The Bexwyke and The Sixth Form Lectures; the design and production of all printed and electronic material; content and design management of the School website; the writing and production of MGS News; event publicity management and the handling of media and press enquiries.
She also provides specialised communication training to MGS staff and facilitates an options enrichment programme to Sixth Form students entitled A Twist in the Tale, which gives an insight into the forces at work behind the scenes which encourage us all to become consumers. Sally delivers a shorter version of this presentation free of charge as part of the School's Open Reach Programme.

Message from the Director of Public Relations
I am often asked why a school as prestigious as The Manchester Grammar School needs ‘marketing’. MGS does not market itself as such, but as with any organisation, we need to ensure that our audience has a good understanding of exactly what The Manchester Grammar School represents and to make it easy for anyone wishing to apply, either as a pupil or a member of staff. This task forms the basis of my role here at the School.
Even though we have existed as a school in Manchester for nearly 500 years, we are never complacent; we never assume that those in our communities know of our existence simply because of our longevity and our reputation. We embrace the fact that we cannot improve our reputation simply by claiming to have a good one, and understand that reputation is based solely on external perceptions and conventions.
MGS public relations and reputation management is about gaining an understanding of our audience and ensuring that our messages are clear and consistent in order to alleviate confusion. It is about reaching out to our audience, telling our stories through local newspapers, magazines and our website, encouraging people to come to the School and talk freely to our boys and our staff at any time during the academic year to see for themselves what MGS does and has been doing since it was founded in 1515.
Chartered Institute of Public Relations Definition
Public relations is about reputation - the result of what you do, what you say and what others say about you.
Public relations is the discipline which looks after reputation, with the aim of earning understanding and support and influencing opinion and behaviour. It is the planned and sustained effort to establish and maintain goodwill and mutual understanding between an organisation and its publics.
