Late Entry

What is late entry?

Late entry to The Manchester Grammar School is for boys who are unable to join MGS at the start of any academic year, perhaps because of relocation, or because he has changed his mind about the school he would like to attend.

We admit boys purely on the basis of academic ability and potential and have no formal quota for admissions from Year 7 onwards; each year we adjust our provision accordingly.

Unfortunately Bursary Funding is not available at Late Entry stage.

Subject to the relevant entry requirements, we will always offer a place to a boy who demonstrates his academic ability and potential during most stages of his school career.

For Years 3, 4, 5 and 6

Places for our Junior School are in high demand.  Please contact Kath Heathcote, at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or on 0161 224 7201 Ext 234, if you wish your son to be considered for late entry for these years.

For Year 7

Late entry at this stage requires an examination in Mathematics and English, and references would also be sought from your son’s current school.  If the Entrance Examination has not taken place for the following year’s intake, he would sit this in full.  Those wishing to join us after this time would sit our supplementary paper set each year for boys who were either late or ill on the day of our Entrance Examination.

Arrangements would be made for your son to come into School for the morning.  He would sit one of the papers before break and during break time be cared for by current pupils from Year 7, visiting the Refectory for refreshments. Our pupils then return him to the care of our Admissions Manager to take the second paper.

If your son is living some distance away or abroad, we may be able to organise for his current school to administer the test on our behalf; our Admissions Manager would make direct contact with your son’s school to establish whether this is an option.

For Year 8

The requirements for Year 7 also apply for this level of entry. However, if your son has previously taken our Entrance Examination at age 11, he would have to wait and apply for Year 9.

For Year 9

Late entry at this stage requires an examination in Mathematics, English, General Science and a Modern Foreign Language (General Science and the MFL are largely oral based). A reference would be sought from the head of your son’s current school and your son would also be interviewed by our Head of Middle School.

For Year 10

Late entry at this stage requires an examination in Mathematics, English, Science and Modern Foreign Language (which is largely oral based). A reference would be sought from the head of your son’s current school and your son would also be interviewed by our Head of Middle School.

Arrangements can be made for boys to take the Mathematics and English examinations in Mathematics and English at their current school and this is organised by our Admissions Manager.  If successful in these examinations they would then come into MGS to sit tests in Science and a Modern Foreign Language. Boys applying at this stage of entry usually have to join Year 10 in September, or very soon afterwards.

For Year 11

We do not admit boys in Year 11 because of IGCSE course restraints.  We also do not consider any applications for just one year in our Sixth Form.
