A camp about the mountains, rooted in the School’s traditions and history, which stands on the School’s own land right in the heart of the Lakes.
The School’s Grasmere Campsite was given to MGS in 1931 by a group of Old Boys. Situated one mile from Grasmere village and below Easedale Tarn, the site comprises of a stone barn, which acts as HQ, a cooking hut, a bothy, and two fields in which our twelve bell tents are pitched by the advance party looking out on Sour Milk Ghyll and Silver Howe/Helm Crag.

The setting of the site is magnificent with no man made structures in sight and access by a rough winding track – we believe there are few more beautiful, tranquil and inspiring places.
There are a variety of activities available with alternative half and full day walks to suit age and ability. Mountain walking is a core activity of the camp and the spectacular views and sense of achievement afforded by conquering a variety of famous peaks have given generations of boys a love of the Lakeland.

Qualified and experienced instructors offer canoeing, rock climbing, and gorge walking throughout the week. On most days, an excursion goes out by minibus to places such as Ullswater for a boat trip, Roman forts in various passes, the Ravenglass and Eskdale Railway, the Wordsworth Museum (pictured above), the Lakeland Birds of Prey Centre, or Grizedale Forest.
On site, the annual soccer competition builds throughout the week alongside cricket and volleyball, and there are a wide range of board games to play in the barn, together with bank and tuck.
Regular cooked meals are provided, with fresh vegetables, meat and a vegetarian option ferried up the rough track from the village by Land Rover. The meals are made by groups led by senior boys, developing a sense of camaraderie and teamwork.

Because the School has camped on this site for nearly 100 years, there is a great sense of history and continuity which gives Grasmere a special dimension, the location really is magical.
