Arkwright scholarship awards 173

Congratulations to Year 12 pupil Mihir Acharya, who has been awarded a prestigious Arkwright Engineering Scholarship at the London Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Mihir was selected after an incredibly rigorous selection process involving thousands of candidates across the country, which included an application form, an aptitude test and an interview where Mihir had to present his project, which was to design an advanced warning system to aid dementia patients.

His project is designed to help nurses to predict when a person who has dementia might walk off, which can be used in homes and in hospitals where there is a growing concern that dementia patients can fall and injure themselves while walking around the hospital unsupervised.

As an Arkwright scholar, Mihir has paired with the Eranda Rothschild Foundation, who are his sponsors and mentor. They will provide Mihir with funding for him to use toward his further projects, interests and studying material related to engineering.

Mihir said: "I am very grateful to the the Smallpeice Trust and the Eranda Rothschild Foundation for honouring me with the scholarship. I am thankful to the Manchester Grammar School's Electronics department and Dr Riley for their continued encouragement and support."
