A Sixth Form team from MGS took part in a charity fundraiser softball game against a team from Withington Girls' School to help with UNICEF's Relief Fund for Ukraine.

Despite wet and windy conditions, both teams participated with determination and resilience through the driving rain. MGS emerged victorious, with some great batting and fielding, led by MGS School Captain Euan Aspin.

Euan commented: "The friendly softball game we held against WGS was a fantastic chance for us to support UNICEF and the Disaster Emergency Fund to help refugees fleeing the crisis in Ukraine. While the game was a friendly rivalry between the two schools, it was also a game about co-operation and collaboration between the two schools".

He added: "It is this strong sense of community and collaboration that is symbolic of the school's desire to support the refugee's fleeing the violence and destruction of their country. We are hopeful that peace can return in Ukraine and that the money we raised as a school through this game and the mufti day can help to support those who have been forced to flee from their homes. We are thankful to everyone who both helped support the game and donated money to help this fantastic cause".

Head Girl at Withington Mayo Adetujoye described her experiences of the game, saying: "This was a heavily anticipated match given the contested rounders match that took place at Withington a couple of weeks before, which raised over £350 for UNICEF. The softball game was in aid of the devastating ongoing refugee crisis in Ukraine which has led to millions fleeing their homes. To fundraise, the two schools came together to round up spectators and sell refreshments during the game. The Withington pupils put up a good match, using their core principles like resilience and determination but the Manchester Owls came out victorious 40-18. Withington have also been able to support the refugee crisis in Ukraine by holding an own clothes day, wearing blue and yellow which has raised over £2000 for the DEC".

She concluded: "Combined with MGS’ mufti day, we have been able to raise significant amounts of money to support these people, and hopefully improve the livelihoods of a few".

Thank you to everyone involved from both schools who were able to make this happen and we hope that this helped to provide invaluable support for the humanitarian crisis.
