Following the cancellation of all sports matches during the pandemic, it was fantastic to see many Senior School pupils travel to London to take part in the Public Schools Fencing Championships and represent the school so well. Well done to everyone who took part, and who gave time and dedication to the sport!

Below are some daily reports written as the fencing was taking place in London, which gives a fantastic insight into the determination of our pupils as they participated in the sport!

First Day report

Four boys competed in Junior epee, years 10 and 11.

Terdoo O finished in 68th place after narrowly losing his direct elimination fight 14-15, with Adyan Q finishing 71st, Ben V 72nd and Zak S finishing 102.

Three of these pupils were competing in their first competition and really excelled in representing  MGS sport.

We had one year 8 pupil competing, Aryan S who fought really well! He is very new to fencing and very close to pulling off a couple of upsets moves in the games.

A great day of fencing and one which will only make our pupils stronger for next year assault.

Year 13

Three year 13 boys fought in London. Dan F started fencing with MGS in year 9 and took a break for rugby returned this year to have a go at this competition one last time fenced really well in an exceptionally hard competition.

Luke G has also been fencing with MGS since year 9 but changed weapon for this competition. This should have been Luke’s third year in London but illness and covid-19 meant this was Luke last chance to have a crack at this competition.

Our last fencer was Reuben S. Reuben only started fencing this year and in fencing has found a sport that he enjoys and excels at. Reuben was in his first competition today and made it through to the second round.

A great achievement by all three boys, who are going to continue their fencing journey at their chosen Universities.

Last days of fencing

The last day of saw 27 MGS pupils competing in three different age groups.

Everyone acquitted themselves extremely well with most pupils making it through to round 2 and 12 fencers making it to the Direct Eliminations, the hardest part of the competition!

In the year 8 & 9 category we had two of our pupils fighting each which turned out to be an amazing fight with Y9 Harris M edging out team mate Y9 Max Y 15-12.

Harris then finished as of highest placed boy in this category at 12th which is a wonderful achievement for his age, and one which he should be very proud of!

In the year 10 & 11 category we had three pupils make it into the Direct Eliminations with our own GB fencing Aum K finishing tied 5th, wining him a medal!

Our last category saw two year 12 pupils and 7 year 13s. 5 boys made it to the Direct Eliminations with Captain, Oliver C finishing highest in 20th.

This competition has been run this year for the first time in three years and we have seen all our pupils compete at an extremely high level against many other boys who represent their countries.

GB, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore are just some of the nations our boy fought against.

MGS Coach David Taylor said: “As coach of our pupils I am very proud of how well they all fought and conducted themselves and I hope they are proud of themselves”.
