Daisy 1

We were delighted to welcome an MGS Teacher of Drama, Sarah Bell, to the first performance of Daisy Pulls It Off, in which year 7-10 pupils came together to narrate the story of Daisy Meredith.

Sarah wrote as follows: "I joined an expectant crowd to watch the first senior school production to make it to an opening night since the pandemic began.

"From the remarkable set design, technical support, superbly executed by Stephen Higham, Chantelle Walton, Laura Crabbe and pupils, to the exquisite direction, from Elizabeth Appleton and Barry Townsend, I felt truly humbled by this brave venture; an all-boy cast playing the mighty Grangewood girls".

She commented on the wonderful atmosphere in the theatre: "The action was slick, fast-paced and hilarious from the off and the gags were flying around the auditorium faster than I could say ‘Jubilate Jemima!’  Superbly rehearsed, so that the comic timing was absolutely ‘spot on’, each character was immersed in the plot, committed to their characters and yet their lines seemed spontaneous; a blend of superb acting and devotion to the piece.

"Jasper H was cast as our resourceful heroine, Daisy Meredith, and he brought boundless energy and natural comic authority to the role in her search for the missing treasure that would save the fortunes of ‘her’ beloved school.  Jasper’s sheer performance enjoyment and crystal-clear characterisation had us rooting for ‘Daisy’ every step of the way.   The audience were delighted with James H who played Trixie, flawlessly, embracing the spoof genre making us desperate for Daisy and Trixie to outwit Sybil’s diabolical machinations.

"Felix W (Monica) brought toadying to a whole new level as ‘she’ fawned over the deliciously snobbish Sybil, played by Hashim K, who was an utter joy to watch. Superb efforts from Conor C and Giles C, who were a well-oiled duo, as Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, effortlessly playing their good-natured senior roles with great skill".

She added: "The whole cast were outstanding, but notable characters were our four teachers, Hal B-L, Kingsley A, Joseph S and Seb D, with their outstanding commanding performances, ranging from Hal’s Russian accent to Kingsley’s compelling portrayal of Grangewood’s Headmistress.  Not forgetting Emaad M, who was an outstanding ensemble member and played the mysterious school caretaker with expertise; a seasoned performer, who delivers consistently in every role he plays.

"Our funniest cameos (Daisy’s Mother and Belinda Mathieson) were played by Raul K, who could give a masterclass in over-the-top spoof performing. And last, but most certainly not least, for me, the scene stealing performance of Isaac R, as Winnie Irving, had me in fits of giggles.  I foresee a glittering future for this young man, in MGS productions!"

Sarah concluded: "Thank you to the whole cast for a very professional yet riotous production.  I loved it."

Well done to all MGS pupils who were involved with the production and good luck for your future acting careers!
