Year 6 pupil James has been excelling in multiple sports, beyond the school pitches whilst also balancing his academic studies.

James said: "I have always enjoyed sport and being active. At a very young age I joined the soccer school at my local grass roots club, AFC Monton and then spent time training at both the Manchester United and City academies. I joined MGS Juniors in Year 3 and really enjoyed the opportunity to participate in many different sports. I am proud to attend MGS and feel pride every time I put on my MGS sports shirt. I am fortunate to have represent the school in Football, Cricket, Hockey, Rugby and Cross Country. I know the benefit of sport and knowing what it feels both to win and lose.

He spoke about the enjoyment of competing: "It is great that everybody is able to play and to represent the school in competitive matches against other schools. Sport is extremely important to all pupils, not just due to the health but providing the opportunity to work as a team and assist one another outside of the classroom. It was a real shame when fixtures with other schools had to stop due to the Covid pandemic. I keep my fitness up in my spare time with running, walking up mountains and general workouts as well as training with my clubs.

"During the football season I play for 2 teams; Winton Ultras U11’s on a Saturday and AFC Monton Tigers U12 on a Sunday. Mostly I play in midfield but am happy to play in any position. I love playing team sports, making new friends and working together to try to achieve the right result. In the summer I represent Roe Green Cricket Club, playing for the U11, U12 and U13 teams. It keeps me very busy! I enjoy bowling, batting and fielding and love going to the cricket nets at weekends to get in extra practice.

"All these teams have training during the week and, as I travel to and from school by bus, I make sure I am organised with my homework so I can participate fully. I am usually able to do my homework immediately after school or when I come home. As we usually have several days to complete the homework, I have not had to miss any training sessions.

James spoke about the various opportunities which he has wholeheartedly committed to: "I have recently enjoyed trying new sports at MGS including basketball, tennis, badminton and table tennis. I love the opportunities that MGS has provided me and being able to represent my school. I have even been able or play in tournaments at the Manchester United and Manchester City training centres. I am really looking forward to the Sports Tour to London in 2023 when we will play football, rugby and hockey against other schools. I certainly can’t wait play as much cricket as possible during the summer Activities Week but there are so many different sporting options for everyone".

Well done James and keep enjoying all of the different sports!
