Year 8 pupil Benjy has been helping Jewish communities by providing entertainment for local nursing homes. During lockdown, he started singing from the gardens just before the Jewish celebration of Passover, as he wanted to ensure that the residents would miss out on an important moment of the Jewish calendar. He sang all of the traditional Passover songs and was asked to go back and regularly sing for all of the residents.

Benjy recalls a particularly memorable experience: “One cold day we were celebrating Jerusalem day in song, and my brother in year 13 had come along to play the cajon.  He was wearing his MGS sports top which has a tiny MGS logo in the corner.  When I had finished singing, one of the women banged on the window summoning my Mum over.

Through the glass she motioned asking if that was an MGS top she had spotted from about ten metres away!

She was very excited to tell my Mum that her Grandson was at the School.  It was Leila Berens, Max Kuhillow's great Grandma! At the time, Max was the Jsoc chair at school and that was a very magical moment.

Recently I learnt all the old musical numbers for one resident who just loves all the golden oldies. Now that I have had the vaccine I've been able to go in and sing from a distance indoors.  I know the residents miss all the events, especially their synagogue which has been shut as no outsiders can come in just yet.  Leading prayers for them in song has been one of the regular requests and it has been very rewarding".

Well done Benjy and keep up the good work!
