Chemistry

We aim to stretch our able students beyond the narrow confines of exam specifications.

We have excellent facilities and the subject is delivered with a great deal of hands-on practical experience.

Beyond timetabled lessons there are weekly Chemistry clubs for Middle School and the Sixth Form, where many of the experiments are chosen by the boys themselves. Sixth Formers take a lead role in these activities and a number act as mentors for younger students.

MGS Middle School boys have regularly won the Royal Society of Chemistry's regional ChemQuiz competition and also the national Top of the Bench competition. Sixth Form boys have won the Regional Schools’ Analyst Competition on several occasions.

In the RSC Chemistry Olympiad, the School gains gold medals every year in the National Competition. In excess of 30 students take part in this event every year and in recent times MGS boys have represented the UK in the International Competitions held in Oslo, Beijing, Perugia, Moscow and Taiwan.

We have developed links with Manchester University, and our Sixth Form students have had the opportunity to be involved in a University-based research project during Activities Week. Our Sixth Formers can also pursue their interest in Chemistry through Philosophical Society, which embraces all three sciences, and features lectures from many leading national figures.
