Old Mancunian Brian Groom publishing success

Congratulations to OM Brian Groom (66-73) on his book ‘Northerners: A History, from the Ice Age to the Present Day’ which has been published.
Brian commented: "When I first thought of it, a decade ago, I was astonished to find only one general history of northern England had ever been published – in 1990. It seemed a huge omission and an opportunity. My emphasis is on people, famous or unsung, who built the north. I cover 180 million years from the dinosaurs to the 2020s, when Brexit and the “red wall” have put the region in the spotlight again. There is far more to the north’s history than the Industrial Revolution, crucial though that was".
He added: "Working on the book reawakened my childhood love of history, fashioned at MGS. When I was about 15, I had a poem published in Ulula about the fraught relationship between Lancashire and Yorkshire. A producer on BBC Look North (now North West Tonight) spotted it and made a short film of it. The interest has obviously stayed with me".
