The Bursary Now Appeal
In October 2020, we will be formally launching our third major bursary appeal since 1998. We do not want to see the number of bursary candidates who are able to access this wonderful school decrease as a consequence of the unprecedented Covid-19 crisis. It is vital that we protect our bursary programme, and we hope that members of the MGS Community who are in a position to help, will support the MGS Bursary Now Appeal.
Each year the MGS Trust, which manages our bursary funds, provides £2m to support our bursary programme. This is possible because of the ongoing commitment from our donors and the prudent stewardship of the Trustees. One of the things that is of most concern to us now is the effect of the crisis on our bursary provision. The drop in investment values has had a significant impact on the current value of the bursary fund and, whilst we expect it will pick up again in the future, we hope that we will not have to use devalued assets to fund bursaries in the next few years, thereby having a lasting effect on the value of the funds. We also know that many of our donors are experiencing similar problems and, with a potential recession looming, we, along with most charities, are very concerned. We have an amazing support base, and at a time when the most disadvantaged children’s education is suffering the most, it is good to know that the 200 or so bursary candidates at MGS will be forging ahead and benefiting from all the advantages a school like ours can provide.
All donations to the Bursary Now Appeal will be given to the MGS Trust, enabling them to provide bursary funding for immediate use by the School. Although we will need to attract a number of very large donations, all levels of support are vital as we aim to ensure that we are able to protect the bursary fund and are not forced to reduce the number of bursary recipients in the years to come.
We are delighted to announce that, since 1 June 2020, more than £300,000 has been raised to support our Bursary Now Appeal. Thank you to those of you who have already arranged a gift to support the Appeal.
