It was fitting that our new Boards of Refoundation were seen for the first time on Wednesday, 1 September 2021, as friends, family and members of the MGS community gathered together for a special service to commemorate the life of Maurice Watkins CBE.

A beautiful service for Maurice was held in our Memorial Hall, and as visitors arrived they were able to see the new boards, which stand proudly in the Quad on the High Master’s corridor.

During Maurice’s time as Chair of Governors at MGS, the MGS Bursary Fund has grown to nearly £30m, with £25m spent on providing bursary places to nearly 700 boys.

Director of Development, Simon Jones, said: “Maurice had such a special affection for MGS, both as a former pupil himself, as a parent, and as our Chairman of Governors. He was absolutely passionate about raising money so that bright boys would not miss out on the education they deserved, and his ambition was that at some point in the future, MGS could return to the needs-blind admissions policy on which it was founded more than 500 years ago.

“It therefore feels fitting that these new Boards of Refoundation stand as testament to Maurice’s vision. As always, we would like to extend our immense thanks and gratitude to our donors. It is their willingness to help, their philanthropy and generosity, that allows us to offer transformational bursaries to bright young men.”
