Thank you to everyone who attended the MGS Islamic Society event at the weekend, as the school welcomes current and former MGS pupils to come together, listen to a range of talks, enjoy a delicious meal and celebrate the Muslim community in the school. The Memorial Hall was filled with 180 people and was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to reunite, after events were halted during the spread of the covid-19 pandemic.

Fuaad J joined Sixth Form last year and is Head of Jummah, encouraging others to lead Friday prayers and leading regular discussions on Islam and Islamic history.

He spoke about the wonderful atmosphere at the weekend: “The MGS ISoc Dinner is our most attended event. Since its starting in 2014, it has continued to be a sell-out event year after year.

“The ISoc Dinner is a staple for our Muslim community. The dinner is our chance to bring the entire community together, inviting parents and guests for food, drinks and socialising. It is a gathering of the Islamic community of The Manchester Grammar School in which speakers come to educate and enlighten students and parents on their specialities in the Islamic field and various other topics. It allows us to learn from the experiences of those more experienced than us and learn from them. Recently, a speaker quoted, ‘The wise man is the one who learns from the mistakes of others, whereas the fool learns from his own’, and this is exactly why we host these events: to allow us to better ourselves and learn”.

Fuaad added: “The atmosphere of the dinner on Saturday was electric with 180 guests to serve, all excited for the upcoming talks, the food, and the chance to socialise with fellow students, parents and Old Mancunians.

“We were extremely grateful to have two extremely charismatic speakers who gave insightful and practical advice during our time in academia and in the workforce. Our first guest speaker, Sufyan Ismail, was a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist, who spoke about the importance of utilising time and on leaving a legacy behind. Our second speaker was Ahmad Al-Astewani, an Old Mancunian and a graduate of the University of Manchester, who spoke about relying on God during our time in academia, in the workforce and beyond”.

Well done to the MGS ISoc committee who helped to organise the event and ensured that the event ran smoothly on the evening, and we look forward to welcoming you all back again very soon!
