This Thursday, Manchester Grammar School’s U13 football team take on Dulwich College in the final of the ISFA U13 Cup. This will be only the second occasion in our history that the U13s have made it through to the final of this prestigious competition.

The first occasion was in March 2020, when the current Year 10’s opportunity to compete in the final was halted due to the coronavirus outbreak. That resulted in MGS sharing the trophy with Aldenham.

This year, the current crop of U13s will finally get to step onto the turf at the Pirelli Stadium, home of league 1 football club Burton Albion. It will be a fantastic opportunity for the boys to showcase their talents and Mr Young, the manager of the team, will be hoping that they can go one step further and win the competition against what will be a strong Dulwich team.

The U13 team had their first taste of silverware last week when they were victorious against East Manchester Academy in the Manchester Schools Cup. The team had a nervy start and lost two early goals, but that never say die attitude led to a fine second half comeback and a dramatic last gasp winner by star striker Fletcher J.

After the match, captain Freddie M said: “This win gives us great belief and confidence going into the match at Burton Albion, especially with the way we have fought back from behind. We have great team spirit, and we never gave up”.

When asked about how this cup victory might influence the outcome of the ISFA final, Freddie added: “We can take a lot of confidence and momentum going into the ISFA final but Thursday is a new game and a different opponent so we have to be prepared and we have to start the game better than we did today”.

“We have a fantastic team this year. The team knows that the Burton Albion final will be a very tough game, but the recent win in the Manchester cup final really helps us to gain confidence for the ISFA final. Coming from 2-0 down to a 4-3 win was a very difficult task and we showed amazing determination.

We also have amazing support from our fellow MGS year 8 pupils. They have been coming along to watch and support our games which really gets us fired up and they have been amazing with the football posters they have created. Thank you so much and let’s win the final!”

The whole school will be behind you and the rest of your team Freddie. Best of luck to all the MGS footballers ahead of the match this week!
