Manchester Grammar School and Dulwich College went head to head on the ISFA U13 Cup final at Burton Albion FC yesterday.

This match saw a very strong Dulwich College team eventually win 3-0, despite the tireless effort of the MGS U13s to hold the opposition back, and some very strong defence!

The MGS team were able to create their own attacking opportunities but unfortunately, they had few shooting opportunities due to resolute defence from Dulwich. Some great defence from the MGS goalkeeper ensured that the MGS team were only 1-0 at half time, and only conceded two later goals in the second half.

Year 8 Kallum C supported the team and wrote a match report on the day. He said: "It was nice, sunny weather down in Burton. The boys arrived at the home ground of Burton Albion FC. After a quick chat in the dressing room, the warmup started. Shortly after, the game kicked off at 12:45 and the MGS supporters were buzzing and excited, as expected. The opening minutes of the game were nervy, some crucial blocks were made, and shots fired wide from Dulwich. We were struggling to string a few passes together in the middle of the pitch and retain some possession. Dulwich’s number 9 was crucial in their attack and caused some damage in the 12th minute. With his back to goal, he pivoted and fired the ball into the bottom corner of Harley’s net. 1 – 0 Dulwich. After some quickfire substitutions, MGS started to put on the pressure and have a go at the other end. We had a spell of possession and then the half-time whistle was blown. Dulwich had the edge in the first half.

"In the early moments of the second half, Dulwich continued to pile the pressure onto MGS’s back line. Dulwich punished a mistake to make the game 2 – 0. Dulwich continued to dominate, until a glimmer of hope, from the captain, Freddie. A well taken freekick struck the outside of the post. We switched to a 3 at the back, and Dulwich took advantage of this and scored with 5 minutes to go. 3 – 0. The fulltime whistle was blown, and Dulwich College had won the ISFA cup".

Kallum summarised: "In the end, a gutting day for the team, but a great achievement to get how far we did and play at a proper stadium with our peers supporting us. We will go again in 2 years’ time".

This is only the second occasion in our history that the U13s have made it through to the final of this prestigious competition, so the MGS team should be very proud of their hard work and determination!

Well done to the team and best of luck in your upcoming games in the season!
